Looking for a way to individualize instruction? Check out Essential Skills. The teacher-designed curriculum targets missing skills and accelerates learning as students work at their own pace. Activities use auditory, visual, and tactile approaches to reward, reinforce, and review. To try it out for free, visit essentialskills.com/learning for instant access.

Start a Smile Train program at your school and show students how a little fundraising can make a big difference. Kids around the world with cleft palates can have trouble eating, breathing, hearing, talking, and, of course, smiling. The fix? A 45-minute surgery that costs about $250. Get a free fundraising pack at smiletrain.org/students.

Five lucky teachers each win a prize pack in the Bostitch Back-to-School Giveaway. Now through September 1, enter to win goodies such as pencil sharpeners, scissors, a scissor caddy, electric three-hole punches, and more. Here’s the link: bostitchoffice.com/back-to-school-giveaway.

Remember, we have two prizes this week so share this giveaway with a teacher pal, too!

  1. I have never been a substitute teacher. As a librarian, I have filled in for a short period of time, but have not had to follow lesson plans.

  2. I was a substitute prior to my full time gig. I hated that I always felt nervous but I loved that the students always made me feel welcome and with good classroom management, they behaved.

  3. Yes, I did. I loved the experience because I got to sub from K to 12. Nevertheless, I always felt nervous when I had to do so.

  4. Yes, I have been a substitute teacher before. It was a great experience that helped me make ends meet after experiencing a furlough. I actually landed a regular teaching position in a district I subbed for.

  5. I have never been a substitute teacher. I have filled in for another teacher before. I knew the kids so it wasn’t that bad.

  6. I have substituted and most of the time I loved it!!! Except one time they sent me to intermediate for music (I can’t carry a tune in a bucket) and no lesson plans and said they were doing recorders!!! The P.E, teacher took mercy on me and traded spots with me!!! Had a great time but give me back my 3 and 4 yr. olds!!!

  7. I have never been a substitute teacher but I have covered another teachers class for an afternoon. I appreciate all that subs due. It is not easy.

  8. I have substituted for a teacher having surgery. I had a great time getting to know the children, and they seemed to enjoy doing things a little differently than usual.

  9. I have been a substitute teacher although I prefer the term guest teacher. I gathered many ideas and tips and tricks. It was exciting until I got my own class.

  10. I was the school’s Pool Substitute teacher. I worked at the same school each day. It was better than regular subbing because the kids were familiar with me and I was part of the school. I luckily got hired at that school, where I have been teaching for 22 years. Substitutes are very important and we appreciate them each and every time we need them.

  11. Actually, I have never been a substitute teacher. While I think it would be cool to be in a different room every day, I love my class and love seeing them every day and watching them grow into amazing little people.

  12. Yes I have been a sub. It was supposed to be an on call sub but turned into an every day long term position????. I really liked it and was sad when it ended a year and a half later.

  13. I was a substitute teacher for 6 years. I was in school working on my teaching degree and thought it would be a good experience for me. I loved it! I recommend anyone interested in a teaching career to work as a substitute teacher for a little while. It is great experience, helps existing teachers and schools, gives you contacts within the school system, and lets you see if teaching is really something you would love to do for the next 30 years or more!

  14. I have subbed for 3 years in the past with elementary, middle, and high school. But preschool is for sure my favorite and still is to this day! ????

  16. I had been a substitute for 2 years. It gave me a new appreciation for everything a sub does and I appreciate them so much!

  17. I was a substitute 1:1 once and I loved it. I knew the little girl and she knew me so it was an easy transition for us both!

  18. I was a long term substitute for the whole year in my first position. It was hard, because I was in someone else’s classroom, and then when she came back I had to find a new job, and leave staff that I enjoyed working with.
