Contests and Webinar for 2010

The new year brings new opportunities for contests plus a free webinar. Here are a few things to look forward to!

Take advantage of a free, virtual professional-development opportunity! On Saturday, January 9, Discovery Education will host Discovery Educator Network SCIcon 2010. During the event you’ll learn about best practices and new techniques for improving your science lessons. Learn more at http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/scienceinaction/denscicon/.

Let parents know about the opportunity to apply for the Heinz Wholesome Memories Intergenerational Garden Award. Fifty-seven families each will win a $500 package of gardening tools—not to mention the opportunity to make lasting memories and pass on traditions from one generation to the next. To get the details, visit http://www.kidsgardening.org/grants/heinz.asp. Applications are due January 10, 2010.
Here’s a contest that’s out of this galaxy: in the Darth Vader Visits Your Library contest, students in grades K-8 describe the perfect planet for Darth Vader’s vacation. Prizes include an actual visit from Darth Vader, Star Wars graphic novels, and more. Get all the details at www.oabookco.com. Entries are due April 1, 2010. The contest is sponsored by Oliver & Andy’s Book Co. and the ABDO Publishing Group

And, finally, part of my New Year’s resolution this year (and almost every year!) is to keep my office cleaner. Help me in that quest! Post a comment and WIN an assortment of new children’s books. Comments must be posted by December 31, 2009. Good luck! (Congratulations to Rebecca, who was our winner. I’ll be sending a box of books for her and her students to enjoy!)

PS: Have you heard about the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge? Click here now to get the details. Students in grades K-8 compete for $100,000 in grants and prizes plus a trip to New York City!
