Can You Teach Yourself to Become a Morning Person?

yawningBelieve it (or not)—there are those who think a person can be taught to be a morning person. I suppose if we can teach children, we can teach ourselves to hop out of bed in the wee hours of the morning! Here are five suggestions I gleaned from online articles. Think these will do the trick?

  1. Wake to music. Craft a stellar morning playlist that gets you up and movin’!
  2. Talk out loud. Whether you talk to a family member, a pet, or yourself, start talking.
  3. Make your bed. How many times were you told to do this as a youngster? The truth is, you’re less likely to wiggle back into a made bed than one that’s unmade.
  4. Stretch! Get your blood flowing right away. Stretch, dance, try a toe-touch or two—in bed or outta bed—whichever your prefer!
  5. Treat yourself. Have a yummy muffin or a special cup of joe waiting for you in the kitchen.

You can also try tough love. For example, choose an annoying, loud alarm tone and position your phone or alarm out of reach. Personally, this one is last on my list!

Will you be readjusting your sleep patterns with the return of a new school year?

Yawn,

Diane

  1. Nope! Don’t believe it! I have NEVER been a morning person. Got up to teach for 32 years and now the best thing about retirement is staying up late and getting up when I’m ready! I can linger in the morning rather than gulp down breakfast and go. Throughout my career I was in the minority, working at school in the evening instead of before school like the rest of the staff. I believe we are born a morning person or not, however the way the world works causes us night owls to adapt. The funny thing is I have always felt guilty for not being a morning person….like there was something wrong with me. Now, I just know it’s who I am!

  2. I get up early year round. But what I have problems with is getting moving. I usually like to sit around for an hour drinking tea and playing on the computer then I get ready and hop too. I hate waking up to an alarm clock too.

  3. I’m an early bird married to a night owl. We are each of us unique – let’s deal with it! Accept who you are and do the best you can.

  4. I will never be a morning person like my hubby! I get up early during the school year because I have to, but not during the summer.?

  5. I am going to have to do these things this year! This year I will be starting at 7am! I am a total night owl 🙁 I wish to be a morning person, but sleep is soooo good in the morning!!

  6. Being a morning person is a ‘forced to conform because of work’ thing that I do. It’s not the REAL me. The real me gets more done after work hours or late at night (like a 3 am bedtime after working on a new ABC banner for my classroom while watching a movie).
They can make me be at work by 7:30 (or a few minutes thereafter), but that doesn’t mean I have to like it or even have my make-up on yet. Don’t worry though, I’m not a slacker. I’m usually at work until 5 or 5:30.
Night owls are awesome people 🙂

    • By the way, the 3 am time was during the last week of summer break. During the school year I try to make it to bed by 12 am at the latest. Ahhhh!
