Back-to-School Night

What does your back-to-school night look like? Is it a meet-and-greet with parents and students before school begins? Or does this special night take place a few weeks after school starts? Either way, there’s sure to be preparation. How do you make this special gathering a success for parents, students, and you?

Eager to hear!

  1. Ours takes place in late Sept. We usually serve some items off our Fall fundraiser pack and meet informally with the parents for a few minutes to answer early questions and give a personal welcome to those who attend.

  2. We do a Fun Fair in July for the kids and Parents to come and just enjoy the school and snacks. In late August we do a Parent orientation with just the Parents where they are giving details about the school and its operation. We cover bylaws and rules, the school day and all the fun (LOL) stuff. That night the Parents can sign up for a slot to Meet the Teachers to bring their child.
Meet the Teachers is a few days later. Each child makes their name mat. I check with Parents to see if they have any more questions that I can help with. And Parents tend to take a picture of us with their child. It helps the child to be able to show people this is my school and my teacher. Then of course I give each child a small bag of animal crackers to take home with them.

Its a nice way to start the year and actually gives us a heads up on who is who.

  3. Our school hosts a Parent Orientation diring the evening the last week of August, which also happens to take place during our Staff Development week. Administration strongly encourages at least one parent to attend, however the evening is not designed for children. Parents meet first with our director for 30 minutes or so. Then, parents proceed to the classrooms to meet the teachers. We give a short talk concerning the specifics of our individual classroom as well as the years goals and objectives. Q&A and fellowship!

  4. My school has open house the last Thursday in August, the week the staff comes back. We start with a brief welcome in our auditorium (gym) and invitation to visit the different booths we have set up (T-shirts and hats for sale, join booster club, learn about scrip and signing up with stores you already shop at to receive 3% donation from that store to our school, athletics opportunities, math and science and spelling clubs, etc.). After 15 minutes, teachers are dismissed to their rooms and the audience is dismissed to visit classes and booths as they choose.

  5. I enjoyed learning about the different ways schools do Back To School Night. I’ve been teaching at the same school all 11 years so I don’t know what else is out there. We have our night about a week after school starts. This year school started so early (Aug. 12th) so it is on Aug 21st. There is a large PTA meeting held prior to dismissal to the classroom. We have 2 sessions where parents go to their child’s classroom to hear about individual teachers’ procedures. I’ve created a powerpoint which has most of my information on it. After 20 minutes, a bell rings and parents move onto the next classroom for their other child.
