Back-to-School Displays

Wow! Some of you are already teaching, and the rest of y’all will be teaching in a jiffy! Thanks so much for sharing the starting and finishing dates of your upcoming school year at First Friday Giveaway. Today is the last day to enter the giveaway, so don’t delay if you haven’t yet participated!

Now, about those back-to-school displays. What are you planning? Do you have a favorite display, or do you change it up from year to year? Below are a few titles (and themes) from teachers who have been published in The Mailbox books and magazines. I’d love to hear what back-to-school display you have planned!

“Welcome to Our Team” (coach cutout with student-decorated soccer balls)

“We’re Nuts About Starting School” (squirrel cutout with student-made acorns)

“____ Grade Is a Blast!” (rocket cutout with student-decorated stars)

“‘Whoooo’s’ in [teacher’s name]’s Class?” (owl cutout with student-drawn self-portraits)

“Quack, Quack, Welcome Back!” (Mama/Papa duck with ducklings)

Eager to hear from you!

  1. “A School Filled With Love” (heart shapes glued together to look like fish, then decorated with glitter and other embellishments. When attached to the board it looks like a “school” of fish!)~I may have actually gotten this idea from a Mailbox magazine…

  2. “Get out of the pool and come to school”. Children decorate themselves on precut bodies (in bathing suits) and cutout and decorate a tube to fit around their body

  3. Our theme is “Knowledge is our Treasure”, so my bulletin will be a treasure map with an X marks the spot and pictures of my students looking for the treasure box. The treasure box will be filled with books to read. The title will be” We are Finding our Treasure in Kindergarten”.

We change our theme and boards every year.

  4. Our class always has a large tree that we cover with apples with each child’s name on it. Title: A “Tree”mendous Welcome! When fall arrives later in the month, we add our fall leaves. This is followed by our pumpkins around the base of the tree for October

  5. My display is going to be “Third Grade Rocks”. I had the kids make electric guitars at the end of last year and write letters to this year’s class about third grade. I picked up some border that has records on it and a decoration that says “We Rock” and I’m good to go!

  6. Pete the Cat welcomes you to the Fantastic 4’s.
Pete the cat is our traveling troll along with his books.
I have a die cut Pete in the middle and a different colored shoe for each child with their name on it. The first day of school they decorate their own Pete the Cat shoe and I replace the one I made and change the header to 4 year loves Pete the Cat.

  7. “Beary” Special students- one big bear in the middle, holding the sign that said “beary special students surrounded by little cut out bears with students name on them.

I change this once a month decorating the bears to match the month. “Beary spooky students” covered bears with ghost cut outs leaving ears sticking out.

I look forward to doing it again this year!

  8. I like having Dalmatians for each child and saying we have a spot for you in our classroom. Every child’s name is on one of the dogs. I have patterns for a boy and girl Dalmatian dog. It is very cute.

  9. “Walking With Jesus” – I found this bulletin board set on a christian website, it is a very cute decorated caterpillar walking with shoes on. The children will pick a pair of pre-cut shoes at our Open House to color and put their name on, then add to our bulletin board outside our Pre-School classroom.

  10. I have a big cookie jar with Smart Cookies written on it, and brown paper bag chocolate chip cookies around the jar. The caption reads: “Welcome to a Brand New Batch of 4th Graders”

  11. Since my last name is Pierce, I do Pierce’s Pride. I put all their names on lion cut outs, we talk about different definitions of Pride, both as a behavior motivator–actions you can take pride in–and as a family of lions. It builds community and teaches expectations too!
