A Handwashing Review

I read an article recently that said 30% of people do not wash their hands after using the restroom. Yeah, it makes me shudder too. And even more people wash their hands by twiddling their fingers through the water sans soap. So I thought it would be timely, what with the current pandemic talk, to encourage a hand washing review for your students. The CDC recommends five steps for hand washing:

  1. Wet
  2. Lather
  3. Scrub (front and back, in between fingers, and don’t forget thumbs)
  4. Rinse
  5. Dry

Go here for more information on when handwashing is important. Perform this action song with your students to encourage handwashing that includes the fronts and backs of hands as well as in between fingers.

(sung to the tune of “The Hokey Pokey”)

Put your right hand in. Hold out your right hand.
Put your left hand in. Hold out your left hand.
Put the soap in the middle Clap hands.
And squish it all around. Rub hands together.
Wash the tops and bottoms Pretend to wash tops, bottoms, and fingers.
And your fingers in between.
And now your hands are clean! Clap to the beat.
