A Frosty “Mathcraft”

No time for arts and crafts? Then plan a “mathcraft”! For each student, cut a circle and a hexagon from white paper; then cut each circle in half and each hexagon into a rectangle and two triangles. Choose a Common Core skill from below to incorporate during the formation of Frosty. Look at Frosty now!

K.G.B.6Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.

1.G.A.2—Compose two-dimensional snowmanshapes to create a composite shape and compose new shapes from the composite shape.

2.G.A.1—Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons.

3.MD.D.8—Finding perimeter. (Why doesn’t the perimeter of the rectangle and both triangles equal the perimeter of the hexagon?)

4.G.A.3—Identify line-symmetric figures. (Find Frosty’s line of symmetry and add symmetrical details.)

Would you like more ideas like this one? Let me know!

  1. Yes, more ideas like this please! Especially at the lower levels it seems like we are trying to incorporate so much in the day that there is more drill than fun. This incorporates both drill on geometric shapes and fun!
