Hollywood is at it again! This time they have chosen to make a screen adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I'll admit it: I cannot wait to see what the moviemakers do with this rollicking story. I have wonderful memories of Max and his wild pals. My mom read this story to me again and again. I read it to my younger brother and then, years later, shared it with my students. This is one you just can't keep to yourself!

Ah, sweet summertime! Now you can finally find a bit of time to relax, spend days with your family, tackle household projects, and pursue favorite hobbies. But I know classroom teachers, and I know that your students are always on your mind. I'm sure you'll be spending some of your precious summer hours planning and organizing for the coming school year. With this in mind, I've taken some time this morning to gather some organizational tips from several of my favorite Mailbox® books, the "500 Classroom Tips" series.

During my second year of teaching, I was across the hall from an incredible teacher named Ms. Dunn. Ms. Dunn shared so many wonderful teacher secrets with me! I couldn't wait to see what she had planned each day. Her students were always engaged in the best learning games, and everything in her room was so organized. People stopped by to see her colorful wall displays, and she knew all kinds of tips and shortcuts. After several months of copying what she was doing, I was convinced that she was the smartest teacher ever!

For a teacher, there’s nothing quite like the end of the school year. It’s busy, tiring, fun, gratifying; the list goes on and on. For me, it was a time of conflicting emotions. I found it hard to say goodbye to my students, but I also looked forward to having time off. I longed to spend lazy mornings at my favorite summertime destination, Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It’s such an incredibly peaceful spot! But a funny thing always happened soon after vacation started: I would start getting excited about the next school year.

If you could walk through the halls of The Education Center®, you would see a lot of exciting things happening. In one hallway, you might find editors squealing over the fresh and fun projects they have found in their daily mail (projects submitted by teachers like you!). In the kitchen, you may find an editorial assistant testing a recipe for an upcoming issue of The Mailbox® magazine. (You may also see a line of eager taste-testers!)

I love teachers! Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with so many who were really incredible. Let me tell you about a few of those special folks.
• Ms. Head was my first mentor and helped me survive—and thrive—during that all-important first year.
• Ms. Dunn taught me that the children always come first, and she introduced me to The Mailbox® magazine!
• Ms. Anderson taught me to be efficient and to make the most of each moment.
• Mr. Rotherham taught me to enjoy every minute with the children.
