Leap Year 2012
Posted by Diane Badden on 22 Feb 2012 | Posted in: Teachers and Teaching
Leap far, leap near, 2012 is a leap year! How cool is that? And even better, leap day, February 29, is on a Wednesday. So “leap” it to me! I’ve rounded up a few activities you can use on this special day.
And where did I go to find these activities? You guessed it—MyMailbox Idea Center Gold!
Now I admit that I needed to get a bit creative. However, once I decided that a frog makes the perfect leap-day personality, I had a mere 360 possibilities to choose from! Ribbit!
Have fun!
Diane
For preschool: Turn your water table into a “ribbiting” destination. Trim two or more kitchen sponges into lily pad shapes. Put the cutouts and a few plastic frogs at your water table. Invite little ones to use the supplies to perform frog behaviors, including leaping! Or arrange yarn circles or plastic hoops in an open area. Invite youngsters to leap in and out of the shapes.
For grades K–1:
“Hip-Hop Hopping”: odd and even numbers
“Lily Pad Leaps”: initial consonants g, n, p, t
“By Leaps and Bounds!”: linear measurement with inches
For grades 2–3:
“Frolicking Frogs”: map skills—coordinates
“A Favorable Forecast”: weather vocabulary
For grades 4 and up: For a writing activity, have each student write a letter to himself describing his current interests and favorite things, such as favorite foods, music, computer games, sports, and clothing. Have him seal the letter in an envelope that is not to be opened until the next leap day, February 29, 2016!
