Hooray for Hobbies!

I recently started taking a drawing and painting class. Now let me be clear—I have reasonable fine-motor skills, but no one is going to confuse my work with Monet’s anytime soon. During my first class, I sketched a still life of a basket of pears. I like to think that my sketch is recognizable as a basket of pears to people other than myself. Even if it isn’t, I’m quite pleased that I’m doing something fun and creative outside of work.
Work can often take up a big chunk of our lives. If I didn’t put forth the effort, I could easily spend an entire week just working, eating, and sleeping. But that would leave me vaguely unsatisfied. What hobbies do you have? What do you do for “me” time? Painting? Needlework? Scrapbooking? Beading? Baking? Karate? Let me know. I’m always looking for some good creative options.
Your blog cohost,
Kim

I love quilting and I started classes in loom knitting over the summer. I love it. With the quilting I make a handprint quilt of my students each year for the school to auction off as a fund raiser.
I love to garden…this is one activity that i am drawn to like a magnet…i am fortunate that my mom and dad owned a beautiful, big house…the garden has always been a place for me to get away from the work week and relax…once i start to dig, weed, water the plants, observe nature, watch the birds, i am in a new land…taken away from the stresses of the world…this is also a place where young and older children don’t have a chance to see…they should be given an opportunity to venture into it to see and witness the pleasure there…vic
I take photographs of wildlife and nature! I average 15,000 photos a year. I also crochet and sew just to unwind at the end of the day.
I love to scrapbook. I look forward to getaways with friends to scrapbook. I also knit, crochet, and quilt.
I do plastic canvas work. It is a lot like cross stitch, but my eyes won’t let me do the small needlework any longer. I get to relax and create something useful at the same time. I collect snowmen, so I create wall hangings, coasters etc for my collection and everything is unique.
My day doesn’t seem complete if I don’t get a chance to sit down in the evening and cross-stitch or do some form of needlework. I recently finished a mosaics class - trying to find ways to use left over glass from the stained glass class I took last year. Now I understand the prices on stained glass pieces I see at craft shows! I don’t require as many band-aids as I once did… Would love to learn to quilt - my mother-in-law pieced by hand and did beautiful work. She passed away before she could teach me. It is getting harder and harder to find places that specialize in the needlearts.
I love to scrapbook and make jewelry. Working with colors and textures is very relaxing to me. I just need to make more time in my life to stop and enjoy my hobbies (and to catch up with all the supplies I’ve purchased).
I was a huge scrapbooker, now really enjoy time on the computer and make all my scrapbooks online via a fantastic online company.
I love it so much I became a consultant (in my free time–what little that is).
I’ve also taken to reading children’s novels. Moving to third grade from K, I am trying to read ahead of my students to reacquaint myself with these great books.
I have just gotten a set of clubs and I am taking up golf with my husband! It is great time together, it is relaxing plus I am getting in some much needed exercise.
I love to scrapbook. I need to start making more time in my evenings to do this. I find it very relaxing.
I’m a cross stitcher. I know it seems to have gone out of style but I love the colors of the threads and the rhythm of pulling the needle through. It is so centering for me. And I love the sense that I am joining centuries of women who have used needlework to order their thoughts and soothe their senses!
I also love to scrapbook. I do a lot of activities with my students using scrapbooking materials.
I love scrapbooking as well. I bring it into my classroom all the time. I have the Cricut and I use it to make decorations for the classroom for every season.
I am a quilter. I have been quilting since I am 18 years old. My mother and grandmother also quilt so I guess that’s where the interest came from.
Quilting is definitely my way to relax! After a long day or a rough week, you can always find me by the sewing machine, working on something. I also belong to a quilt group. There are 6 of us who get together every 2 weeks for the afternoon and work on various projects. It is an awesome way to get inspired and share interesting ideas. We also get away at least twice a year for a quilt retreat. It is nice to get away from it all, have a little “me” time, and do something I love with great friends! I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have my quilting!!
I love to scrapbook! I have even brought some of it into my classroom. We make thank you cards in December for them to use. In Feb. we usually make cards to send to the local children’s hospital. I take lots of pictures as well! I also write children’s stories. Sometimes we read or illustrate some in class.
