Winter Weather

Is it winter yet? In many ways, it doesn’t feel like it. I’ve only scraped frost off my windshield once. When I head outdoors, I grab a sweater or light jacket instead of a coat, a hat, and gloves. On the other hand, nearly everywhere I look, I see seasonal decorations—snowmen, penguins, or glowing snowflakes—that make me feel as if winter has arrived!
Thinking about winter takes me back to teaching on a snowy day. I got a huge kick out of watching my students’ faces light up when they realized the snow was sticking on the ground instead of melting. (My lesson could wait a minute or two while everyone—including me!—crowded over to the window to check.) I absolutely loved the day my entire class worked together on the playground to roll what students were sure would be the biggest snowball ever. Talk about a cooperative effort! I’m choosing to forget about the soggy gloves, coats, and carpet that were left behind! For now, I’m getting ready for winter. I’ve changed my computer desktop to a wintry scene, and I’ll keep my coat, hat, and gloves handy. I know winter’s on the way!

YEH, what a great site and informative posts, I will add backlink - bookmark this site? Regards.
I also hail from Michigan, where my preschoolers are constantly looking out the windows at the snow. I love this time of year, but dread getting them all bundled up for the first few weeks of snow fall. This is the first week that almost everyone of my students was able to completely dress in snow pants, boots, hats, gloves, and coats independently. Sure I’ve got to help with a few zippers, but beats completely dressing them. NOW, I can make it outside and enjoy the snow with them! Gotta love Michigan winters!
Hi there from Alberta Canada where yes we have winter and snow and below -20c most of dec, jan, feb. I’ll spending my Xmas break planning theme units to escape the mind numbing cold. This is the time of the year I focus on The Rainforest or Oceans.
Enjoy your warm climates!
Here in Florida we read so many holiday books about snow and cold weather, but it’s just so hard to get the real idea. Every year we have a “snow day” in Kindergarten. We crank up the air conditioner, put on coats, hats and gloves, and have a “snow ball fight” with paper snow. We finish up with hot cocoa. It’s a great way to get in a wintery mood!
(We’re always thankful afterwards to put away our coats and head outside for recess!!)
Wow, it’s so great to read posts from other international teachers! I’m teaching in China, and the area I’m in has strange seasons. Winter is cold, made worse by the fact of no central heating or insulation, but it never gets cold enough to snow. Coming from Michigan, cold is no good without snow. It never freezes at all, so our plants stay green all year. It was very hard to adjust to a green Christmas when I first came! I am still thankful, though, that I get to wear the fun winter accessories, like scarves and hats and coats.
i am one of those who lives on the other side of the ocean and misses seeing seasons really change!hard to teach to 3 and 4 yearolds when it is sunny most of the time.it sometimes snows in the mountains but nothing like what i have seen coming from canada.living on the island of cyprus is okay but i miss those great snowy canadian winters!
Hello,
I am sending this mail from İstanbul. I am a kindergarten teacher. A parent of one of my students in Dubai gave me your two magazines called My Family and Friendship in 2004. I am a fan of the mailbox ever since.
I follow all of your publications on your website. I would like to thank you for you efforts and your priceless creative ideas.
Finally, I would like to ask if you are planning to publish your magazines in istanbul.
Yours sincerely,
Wow! Linda I sure am glad I live in the sunny south…..OH WAIT…we have had rain everyweek (up to 3 inches at a time!) with the high in the 40s!! What a teaching tool–last year we were in a drought and this year we already have DOUBLE the rain we had last year. Yes, you guessed it—we have rain again today
I don’t know where you live, but we’re experiencing winter weather and then some. Indoor recess due to below zero temps.Add that to the holiday excitement and it’s a recipe for aching eardrums and requests for naps from the teachers! I do enjoy early winter and the first snow…but 5 or 6 months of it is NOT fun!!
