Technology: Fun or Frustrating?

Several minutes ago, as I was pondering an appropriate topic for this blog post, I heard a squeal of alarm from Brenda, the editor in the cubicle next to mine. Because anyone squealing in the workplace is intriguing, I jumped up to see what was the matter. I found Brenda staring at her computer screen in horror. All the images were no longer in the normal direction. They had, in fact, rotated. So in order to see her screen as normal, she would have to lie in front of her computer on her left side. I thought this was hysterically funny. Other editors started to gather, and when the laughter died down, we all began throwing out suggestions for correcting her screen malfunction. Nothing worked and we all felt clueless. It took a technology-savvy coworker to solve the problem.
Technology, it seems, has the power to render everyone clueless from time to time. Do you feel that you have a firm grasp of all things computer-related or do you occasionally want to take a bat to your printer/scanner/fax machine? Do you incorporate technology into your classroom with great joy? Or do you do so grudgingly, knowing that it will cause you headaches? Drop me a line and tell me about technology in your life.
All the best!
Kim

I too get frustrated. It just seems like everytime I go to send something I did at home to my email at school, it doesn’t show up at school! I’m trying to learn new things about the computer but then I get to the point where I have to just stop. I’m trying to learn what others already know. I have to say, it is a lifesaver and it is wonderful that our school has a website for parents to check into what is happening in the classroom. I LOVE being able to create my own site and put information on it for parents. However, we still have families that do not have the internet and I think we need to keep that in mind.
I am very frustrated with my computer its only 8 months old and already in the shop. What the heck? Yes I depend on it way to much thank goodness a friend gave me hers to use but I cant print off of it the installation CD did not work. Its been gone for almost two weeks now. I WANT/NEED my computer back I’m lost without it!
Oh, how I’d love to take a swing at the computer from time to time! And it’s annoying as it can be - it seems that technology is taking the place of good-old-fashioned-books. Yes - paper, people! Paper is your friend!
But seriously … tech is great but we rely on it too much. If all the computers go down we’ll be totally sunk. All our records are going digitized - from schools to banks to your medical records. Military, food, transportation, basic human services … run by computers!
But since we’re preparing kids for life in the 21st century, we need to use technology. We need to capture kids where they’re at - and they’re so visual - but is it responsible to go completely digital? Education is more than “training” kids … in the words of our “Educator” tablets from the 80s, “Learning Maketh a Man Fit Company for Himself”. IMHO “fit company” involves reading books - books w/o pictures! Writing by hand, and not using a keyboard!
OK, off the soapbox now.
