Social Sites: A Guilty Pleasure
Posted by Debra Liverman on 04 Sep 2009 | Posted in: Life After School, Meet the Mailbox®, Teachers and Teaching
Do you tweet? Do you post? Can’t stop taking those crazy quizzes on Facebook? I know I answered yes to all the above. I must say, within the last year, I’ve become hooked on Facebook and have recently spread my addiction to Twitter. How did I learn about Ted Kennedy’s passing? By following Ann Curry from the Today show on Twitter. How did I know when Top Chef was returning to TV? The Top Chef fan page on Facebook told me.
I’ve come to rely on these social networking sites to keep me up-to-date on important events. (Okay, so maybe the premiere of Top Chef is not earth-shattering news.) What social sites do you turn to? Who are your favorites to follow? If you haven’t yet, we’d love for you to become our fan on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
Congratulations to Linda S. of Rio Rancho, NM! She is the winner of a copy of the Social Skills for Little Learners book.

I am on Facebook, but I do not get on very often b/c I do not have internet at home. I check it after school when my kids are gone, and that’s about it. We have created a group for our school for parents to keep updated on current events. I like keeping up with all of my high school/college friends as well as family that live out of state. It’s a great networking tool.
Love keeping up with former co-workers and students on Facebook!!
I’m soooo addicted to Facebook and especially Farm Town and Farmille.
I must admit, I am guilty of the Facebook addiction! However, I have not crossed over into the Farmville addiction that all of my Facebook friends are into. I honestly never thought that I would love a social networking site as much as I do. I enjoy seeing my cousins online and catching up with them daily!
I am a facebook-aholic! I check facebook all day long during my breaks on my phone…in fact I had to upgrade my phone so it would be easier to check facebook on my mobile. LOL!
I tweek too…but that’s just not as much fun as Facebook and all the pictures and fanpages and games/apps.
I love facebook! I never thought I would be the type to “post my status”, but it is so fun! It is a great way to keep up with friends and family, especcially those who don’t live near you.
I love facebook, and I am a complete addict. I keep everything private- pictures, statuses, etc. It’s amazing what you can do with privacy settings!!! I like being able to connect with former co-workers, high school friends, etc. It really has been a positive change in my life.
I use twitter also- not so often, but I do like all the up to the minute updates. People are impressed when I look up from my phone and say “oh, this just happened…” lol
I am totally in love with Facebook! I am on there quite a bit. I love being able to be connected to friends and family that live quite a bit of distance away from me! My kids think it is cool to chat with their grandparents when they are on!
I love Facebook! It’s been great to reconnect with old friends. I haven’t gotten on Twitter yet, but that will probably be my next “guilty pleasure.”
I’m glad The Mailbox has been “keeping up with the times” and joining the masses by getting on Facebook and Twitter!
Our school strongly discourages us from engaging in social networking websites. They are worried somehow parents or kids will be friends of friends and be able to see our private pictures or even worse pictures our friends tag of us. I don’t have anything parents or students can’t see, and none are my friends right now, so I have one. Mine is also private.
I have found they are a really fun way to connect with people. Like anything though, too much of a good thing can be dangerous:).
I’m old-fashioned for my age, and am stubborn in my idea that most communication should be done face to face. I worry about the development of children’s social skills in the near future. I also strongly agree with Paula, and enjoy having my personal privacy.
That said, it looks like it’s going to be really tough to keep out of all these sites in the next few years…
