Social Sites: A Guilty Pleasure
Posted by Debra Liverman on 04 Sep 2009 | Posted in: Life After School, Meet the Mailbox®, Teachers and Teaching
Do you tweet? Do you post? Can’t stop taking those crazy quizzes on Facebook? I know I answered yes to all the above. I must say, within the last year, I’ve become hooked on Facebook and have recently spread my addiction to Twitter. How did I learn about Ted Kennedy’s passing? By following Ann Curry from the Today show on Twitter. How did I know when Top Chef was returning to TV? The Top Chef fan page on Facebook told me.
I’ve come to rely on these social networking sites to keep me up-to-date on important events. (Okay, so maybe the premiere of Top Chef is not earth-shattering news.) What social sites do you turn to? Who are your favorites to follow? If you haven’t yet, we’d love for you to become our fan on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
Congratulations to Linda S. of Rio Rancho, NM! She is the winner of a copy of the Social Skills for Little Learners book.

i too am a member of facebook but i can`t say that i have the time to be on it as often as i would like. i feel it is a great resource to keep in touch with friends and family as long as it is used properly…and of course that is up to each individual to do so!
Its not for me. I have looked at facebook but …….it seemed like to much work for me. Although I have to say most of my former parents have invited me to view there pages. I never thought I could keep up with my former kids on it. So maybe……
Facebook is my favorite! My friends live all over the world and it’s a great way to keep in touch with them. I also like how Facebook tells you when your friends’ birthdays are coming up!
Twitter is such a great tool. There are so many opportunities to spread information, learn new things, keep in touch with friends, and meet new friends! I can’t remember life before Twitter.
I spend a lot of time on the internet, but not so much on social networking sites. My one concession is Facebook. I agree with Paula about how important it is to be careful about what you say online and what others say about you.
We have had a problem with parents crossing the line by using these forms of communication. I had a parent contact a teacher in another classroom via Facebook over the weekend asking her to inform me that her children would be absent from my class the following week. We have had to update our employee policies and procedures to include a clause regarding posting images or information through Facebook specifically. I think it’s become ridiculous.
I like keeping up with old classmates - mine from high school and college and students from previous classes. I had one boy that moved the last month of school - This summer his mom found me on facebook and connected and I was able to see pics of his first day of kindergarten and that was very neat. I love the idea of having a school page! Thanks for that!!! I don’t have as much time as I did before school started but I do like being able to check in with friends when it fits in my schedule but not theirs.
I’m totally addicted!!! eek!
I spend most of my time at Splitcoast Stampers or SCS. It is full of not only stamping ideas, but ideas for scrapping and making 3-d art projects. I have used several things from that site in my classroom. I love papercrafting and have a blog to that effect. Come on over for a visit. LOL! I also share ideas and pics (without students) of my classroom and art that we create…
so fun! I’m truly enjoying this blog. Next I’ll be heading over to Facebook to ‘add you as a friend’…
Gulity pleasure indeed. The neat thing is I have been able to keep in touch with former student’s families on some of these and get to hear about how they are doing.
I love Facebook and I am a blogger on Blogspot!
Personally, it has been a wonderful tool to catch up with friends from high school and college. My sister and I have also used as way to stay in touch. I tend to stay away from the quizzes and similar things. Professionally, my board and I discussed whether or not to have a group page as way to stay in touch with parents. We decided to investigate further as we are concerned about the legal aspect especially when pictures come into play.
I tried it our and then worried about the response I may or could get from parents…I feel as a teacher we have a reputation to uphold and an image that we need to present to our families and people post a lot of inappropriate things on your wall and so on. I know we are human and like everyone else in society but I feel I want my parents to see me in certain light and there will always be those few that read it and comment about it negatively
