My Learning Curve
Posted by Sherry McGregor on 31 Aug 2009 | Posted in: Planning and Curriculum, Teachers and Teaching
I’ve been planning for the next school year. And, well, the spreadsheet format I’m using is a little tricky. So I’ve been learning some new processes, and I’m here to report—it has not been easy. I started out with a little surprise and curiosity. (”Oh, I don’t think I know how to do that, hmmmm…”) Next, I hit the gentle slope of exploring the new skill. (”Yes! I’m learning something new, and it makes sense!”) Then before I knew it–BAM!–I hit the wall! (”What? I thought…”) Anyway, I know I’ll figure it out, and then I’ll happily tuck this new skill into my bag of tricks. In the meantime, however, I’ve got some climbing to do!
Congratulations to Linda S. of Rio Rancho, NM! She is the winner of a copy of the Social Skills for Little Learners book.

We are also starting the year off with a few new programs, I am in the e-circle program so i have to use a lot of there stuff, some of it is pretty good but i prefer to get my curriculum stuff out of the mailbox books. They give you so much info to go on and to use in your classroom my children just love doing the activities that i apply to my curriculum. I enjoy them just as well myself.
We are starting the year with several new programs also. I am very worried about applying these new programs into my day to day but you are right eventually we will get there.
It’s so great for us teachers to have reminders of how hard learning can be sometimes! This year our school is implementing a new program and a lot of the teachers are having difficulty changing their teaching style. As adults we are used to staying in our comfort zone and rarely push the boundaries even if it’s in the best interest of our students.
Even if we end up dragging our heals, as long as there’s learning happening we’ll always end up on top!
I love learning too. But sometimes all this new technology drives me batty. But after I get over the frustration I think about my class and how they react to something they are trying to learn and just can’t quite get.
One thing as teachers that I am not sure people realize that are not in the profession is that we are always learning about something. Of course most of it is not as hard as all this new technology. LOL.
Technology is a tricky thing for me. My grandsons on the other hand …not a problem for them. And they love helping grandma figure things out. I started doing employee taxes I have really felt like I have hit the wall on that at times, but I just keep going and yes I get it, until a new something comes along.
I am looking for an easy to work with, yet free (!), monthly newsletter template for my class. Can anyone help me locate one?
Just a reminder that learning never really stops.
We have a new software program at the school I work in for attendance and grades…oh the joys of learning this new system.
Katie I totally agree with you, it seems things are going fine then wham, something goes off the track, adjust and things go ok then wham we adjust again, but isn’t that in all parts of our lives?
Flexibility is the name of the game we call teaching.
This is exactly how I feel with my classroom. I think I have everything under control for a week or two, then CHAOS. I make some adjustments suggested by classes, books, or other staff… then everything is running smooth. I feel like I conquered something big!
Then it’s something else, or the original problem rears it’s head. I do feel a kinship with my toddlers– the frustration and the perseverance that seem to go hand in hand. We must concentrate on our little triumphs, knowing that there will be another wall to climb shortly.
While reading this, I found myself thinking–that’s exactly what it is like for the kids! Isn’t it a great reminder of what it is like to learn, explore, and experience the trial and error of learning?
I am right there with you Sherry! I have taken on a teaching role in a school system that is new to me. I am not what you might call the “traditional” classroom teacher nor am I a “specials” teacher. My teaching position is unique to the school system in which I work. As excited as I am to embark on this professional venture…there is so much to learn. Beyond my role as a teacher, I must gether and organize data…not one of my favorite things to do. Sometimes I wish I could see into the future and know how it all turns out so then I could have an easier time planning now. Nonetheless, I am confident I will learn all that I need to and will hopefully remain calm and collected throughout the process. Best wishes to you on your “climb”!!
This is my everyday! From this blasted new Blackberry my husband forced me to get, from new email servers, to new microwaves, I thought we deserved a little break every now and then! Oh well, knowledge is power!
I like to learn different things every day. To me learning is to explore different areas in children or to explore different areas at work or reading different things. i love the word learning. because learning is a thing you must do. when i think of the word learning, i think of, to read books, magazines or ect.. to learn something new takes time to learn it.
