Summers are getting shorter. At least that’s the impression I got during recent trips to discount stores. While getting ready for a beach trip, I went shopping for swimming supplies. What I found was that the outdoor-living area, which had overflowed into several aisles in May, was reduced to one aisle. In its place was—you guessed it—every kind of back-to-school supply imaginable! This was early in July! I felt like summer was being snatched away from me.

What do you think? Do you get excited about returning to the classroom when you see back-to-school supplies in early July? (I have to admit, there’s nothing better than a brand-new box of crayons no matter what time of year!) Or do you feel like you’re missing out on some of your summer?

It is a little crazy that our holidays (including back to school) are advertised so early in retail. I remember getting so excited when summer was almost over (really) and the back to school supplies were out in stores. I worry that the back to school excitement wears off (now replaced with dread of a short summer) by the time school starts for kids now.

I love getting a good deal. Since my school is tight on money and purchasing supplies, I buy all of my own. Just today I got a great deal on glue sticks. I only paid 20 cents for two packs. I saved over $28 on 16 packages. I teach first grade and go through a ton of these. My mom doesn’t quite understand how that happens but I just tell her to trust me. Keep buying them I tell her.

I too get excited to see the things out for school, but am always disappointed to see the summer end. Living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we didn’t see a whole of summer this year. Quite disappointing!

Even as a child I always loved shopping for back to school supplies. As a teacher I love when the items are on sale and I am able to stock up for the upcomming year. I always try to buy everything that I think I am going to need for the school year because I know that if I were to buy the supplies I would be paying 4-5xs the price for the same exact product. Purchasing my supplies early allows me to better prepare for the projects and activities that my Kindergarteners will be completing throughout the year.

Of course while I enjoy shopping for school supplies it is rather depressing to see the fall decorations out already. It seems like summer just started and it is going to be over already.

I think it is exciting. I love watching for those deals on school supplies to stock up my classroom.

I like to see the supplies out early because I like to get prepared early and then kick back and relax. My mom always told me to get my work done first and then go out to play so I guess I’ve carried that over into adulthood. :-)

We saw school supplies out less than a week after school was out. Finding that having to plan ahead helps me to be more organized. And there really is nothing like the sight of a brand new box of crayons!

I have mixed emotions too. My kids and I walked into Walmart and ran right into new school supplies. It was kind of funny because we got so excited that crayons were only 25 cents!!! Of course, we had to look at all the cool new patterns of notebooks too. One lady was laughing because I think she was in shock over kids getting excited over school supplies.
Of course, I love shopping for new school supplies!!! I love my summer days at the beach, but in my heart, I am always dreaming of new ideas for kindergarten.
For those of you that start school early, we only have 6 weeks left!!!

I have mixed feelings. It’s exciting to buy new supplies especially when you find a great sale, but the reality that the summer break will be over shortly makes me think about all the things I planned to accomplish this summer!

I agree with everyone, it goes by way too fast. We teachers always look forward to the holidays that happen during the school year because we know we’ll have a few days off. However, when those summer holidays come, we wish they come slowly.
Stores do put out school supplies too early as well as the holiday items. It’s really depressing to see Christmas in July! I just wish our district would post the school supplies the kids need for the following school year in local stores. Each district is different as to what they request and some parents just are not sure what to buy. There are great bargains out there and you can get some really great things early. I admitt, I do buy those “sale items” early because they make such great Christmas gifts and other gifts.

Since we’ve officially been out one month as of today it summer does certainly feel like it’s going too quickly. Our local stores have had back to school items out for a couple weeks already.

Summer does seem to go faster each year. This is probably because we have staff development sessions the week after school ends and the week before school begins - cutting our summer short by two weeks from the very start. But… I have to admit that I am getting the “fever” and have already started working on little projects for the upcoming school year!

It seems everything is rushed. Halloween things out in August, Thanksgiving out in September and Christmas items out in October. As a child I do not recall seasonal items out as early as they are now.
Back then school did not start until after Labor Day either.
Times change and we must change with them or voice our thoughts and hope there are enough of us to slow things down again.
