Chilling Out With Children

My husband is a golfer. My young nieces don’t completely understand what that means, but they know they love their uncle, and just recently, they discovered that they also love to play miniature golf. Of course, it was only a matter of time before their two loves got together.
My husband really enjoys spending time with my nieces, but he was hesitant before we ever pulled into the parking lot. After all, he’s a serious 18-hole-playing, course-walking, bag-carrying golfer. When we saw the course, he gave me a quick look. I couldn’t blame him. We were looking at a four-story straw hut contraption with mazes, ponds, and bridges. But what could we do? The girls each grabbed one of his hands and we were off. A little while later, we were laughing and scoring holes-in-one and enjoying the view from the top. We all had a great time!
Isn’t it fun to take time away from the serious business of life and just look at it through the eyes of a child? As much as my hardworking husband covets time for a good round of golf, playing a whimsical round of Putt-Putt with my nieces was time well spent. I’m sure he’ll be thinking about those bridges and mazes the next time he’s on the real golf course with the boys.
As a teacher, you know better than anyone else that spending time with a child can give you a whole new outlook on life. And I know that, unlike my husband, you get to spend a lot of time looking at life through the eyes of children. Why not take a few minutes to tell us about some of your favorite times with your students or with some of the children in your family? It’s sure to make us all feel a bit younger!

i dont have any kids of my own. i am a daycare teacher and i work with preschool kids and love it. I love using the mailbox magazines for ideas and to read.
I love spending time with my grand daughter who is 4yrs. She has me read her stories, then she will read them to me. She also writes letters and reads them to me. It wonderful spending time with her. They live with me while I’m waiting for my house to get built. I will really miss the time I spend with her. She says she’s going to be an actress.
I was just blessed with a beautiful grandson, named Logan. My daughter, Shannon, has soom background in ECE and I enjoy watching her and my son in law, Julio, raise their son. Since Julio is in the Marines, he spends time training his men so Shannon came to stay a week at home.
I can’t tell you how much my heart was filled and overflowing when Shannon gave Logan his bath and then held him while reading a lullaby book to him. She softly read and sang the stories and songs in the book. Logan quielty drifted off to sleep.
Afterward, I told Shannon how proud of her I was. She replied, “When I was little you sang and read to me. I loved it so I want Logan to enjoy those things as well.”
Motherhood, what a blessing!!!
We like to take our kids camping in the summer time. It gives them a chance to explore nature and have some time away. We also like to spend time together in the kitchen. They like to help measure, mix, and chop.
I work with clay and enjoy making serious little sculptures and used to get annoyed with my son for wanting to use all the clay, etc. Was too busy with “working at playing” to really notice his earnest desire for good time with mommy; with his wanting to emulate mommy; wantin got learn. I don’t get annoyed now - I cherish these moments bc as he gets older, they get to be fewer.
I also spent a day with my grandson to celebrate his birthday. We went to McDonald’s and he suggested going to Walmart to look at books. I took him to Barnes and Nobles! After about 3 hours of excited pleasure for us both, we left with quite a few books. He said, “That’s my favorite store! Can we come back at least once a month???” Now, what could make a grandma/teacher any happier??? He even said,”This has been my best birthday yet!” AHHHHH
I put my two boys in swim lessons the past 2 weeks. The oldest is 6 & the youngest is 3. I was in the Mommy & me class with my younger son but was right next to my older son’s class. It was great to watch my boys struggle through the lessons and then to hear them retell what they did to their father. Their retellings were so much more upbeat than when they were actually going through the lessons. My younger son was deathly afraid but enjoyed kicking & kisses, every time he kicked his legs I gave him a kiss. My older son, poor thing, couldn’t swim to save his life but to hear his side he LOVED jumping off the side and “swimming” back. It was great to hear my boys’ versions of swim lessons. It made me feel better about “forcing” them to take swim lessons.
That’s too cute! My husband and I just took our 3 year old little boy to the beach and the look on his face, when he saw the ocean, was priceless. He just giggled and giggled the whole time we were in the water! It’s great to appreciate your kids and to think like they do sometimes!
We recently went to Disney with my two girls. I don’t know which was better to see Disney through the eyes of my girls or to be there and see it myself. I felt like a kid again. I think it was the best trip I have ever taken!
I recently spent a weekend with my six year old grand-daughter. It all started when she called one night saying she misses me and wants to spend 2 nights with me. During our time together, we went to the movies, played putt-putt and all the coing machines, took our dog, Ginger, for a walk, rode bikes, ate at McDonald’s, made lemon-aid cookies and went shopping. We both had a great time. What surprised me the most is what she picked to buy with the money I presented to her. She bought folders, notebooks, and stickers. She planned on making things for her love ones. She and our time together was priceless! We both have memories that will last a lifetime.
