Classy Mascots

Take a peek at my office. I’m surrounded by ducks. Are you wondering why I have a fondness for pond critters? Well, my class mascot was a big, fluffy duck named Puddles. And my students seemed to take pleasure in adding to his family. |
In addition to the fluffy critters who had their own special area of the room, I decked out the room with a duck theme. We had duck nametags, duck hall passes, and duck-themed journals. You name it, I probably had ducks on it! In hindsight, I might have gone a tad overboard (especially in the eyes of my coworkers) but my kindergartners loved it!
Do you have a class mascot? If so, do you tie him/her to a theme? I’d especially enjoy hearing about other teachers who have gone as “quackers” over their class mascots as I did. Maybe it was more of a lower-grades thing. How about it, upper-grades teachers? Do you have class mascots?
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Sharon (and Puddles)

I used to work at a child care center named Monkey Business. They have been around since 1993 so you can imagine how much monkey stuff they have collected. Parents and families go crazy especially since the recent monkey fad. I still love collecting monkeys!
Our grades 1-4 classroom voted to be the White Doves this year. We made tee shirts with a dove iron-on that one of the parents made for us.
We wear them for party days and other special occasions. Since we normally wear school uniforms, this is a treat.
As an older class, we don’t have a stuffed toy mascot but this idea has been popular with the children.
My 1st grade class mascot is a giraffe named Lenny. He has a nightly sleepover at the students’ houses. They take pictures with him and write about what they did together in a Class Mascot Journal. They LOVE it! This is the first year I have done this and I will from now on.
My 1st grade classroom is full of frogs. It began when I threatened to turn the whole class into frogs if they did not shape up. Now I have everything from frog jewelry to posters. I am known as the frog lady, anytime a student sees a frog I know about it.
