Fascinating Facts
Posted by Debra Liverman on 23 Jan 2009 | Posted in: The Mailbox Books
Okay, upper-grades teachers, this month’s featured book series from The Mailbox® Books is for you! We know that trying to fit social studies and science into your already-packed day can be a challenge. Well, these books can help. We’ve paired the key science and social studies topics that you have to teach with reading comprehension skills. The result? Our Fascinating Facts books.
Each book has 50 sets of comprehension-building student pages. The first page starts with a fun, fascinating fact to pique student interest followed by a nonfiction reading passage. The second page reinforces the same topic with a fun follow-up activity.
Print the sample pages, try them with your class, and then be sure to check back and let me know what your students think of them. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a drawing for a free Fascinating Facts book.
Congratulations to 2nd grade teacher, Karen Dilworth, at Ashley Elementary in Frisco, TX. She is the winner of the Grades 2-3 Social Studies book.

I heard about these books but haven’t gotten around to purchase them.
The sample page is great. I would like to see something on the Civil War added since this is one of standards we must cover.
What a great idea! I work in a low-income school, so I have to buy a lot of my materials. Plus, I’m lucky to get in science and social studies each day. Thanks!
Thank you for the sample pages! This looks like something that would be a wonderful supplement to our curriculum!
Our class used the Fantastic Facts Science sheets (2nd grade) on weather ….
They correlated EXACTLY to our curriculum/unit of study that we are currently studying.
The students LOVED them! They especially liked the
‘Breezy and Blustery’ crossword puzzle …
One student made the observation that she had more facts to add to her writing assignment on wind after completing the worksheet!
Thanks for providing the sample sheets … I love to
‘test drive’ worksheets before I invest in the resource book! (: Karen
These books look fantastic. The stories are short enough that I could use them in my afterschool classroom. We are really working on comprehension and most of my students enjoy science and social studies so these are perfect subjects for them.
Thanks for providing great resources…these look like they are great….fitting in well with the topics in our textbooks.
Just in time! When I opened the email, I looked and there was just what I was needing. The students could use the extra practice on the skill in comprehension about famous Americans and loved your format. Thanks!
I own both of these books. They are a wonderful addition to supplement the curriculum or use them alone. Thanks again for a great product Mailbox!!!
I homeschool my granddaughter and I am using the 2-3 grade Science & Social Studies books. We are just flying through both books. She really enjoys both subjects & there is so many great activities to do in them. She is learning much more than I would have thought since we do not use text books. We are looking forward to using the 4-5 set when we are done with these.
