Fascinating Facts
Posted by Debra Liverman on 23 Jan 2009 | Posted in: The Mailbox Books
Okay, upper-grades teachers, this month’s featured book series from The Mailbox® Books is for you! We know that trying to fit social studies and science into your already-packed day can be a challenge. Well, these books can help. We’ve paired the key science and social studies topics that you have to teach with reading comprehension skills. The result? Our Fascinating Facts books.
Each book has 50 sets of comprehension-building student pages. The first page starts with a fun, fascinating fact to pique student interest followed by a nonfiction reading passage. The second page reinforces the same topic with a fun follow-up activity.
Print the sample pages, try them with your class, and then be sure to check back and let me know what your students think of them. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a drawing for a free Fascinating Facts book.
Congratulations to 2nd grade teacher, Karen Dilworth, at Ashley Elementary in Frisco, TX. She is the winner of the Grades 2-3 Social Studies book.

Thank goodness for something that is usable in the classroom. With so much to cover, the Social Studies activities really help. We also LOVE the science activities! Most of your activities go right along with our Core Content and Framework. Thanks so much!
Science Grades 2-3 is fantastic! My students really enjoyed the articles and activities.
I purchased the “Social Studies Fascinating Facts 2-3″ edition this fall. I have REALLY been pleased with the non-fiction selections and the variety of ways that skills and comprehension questions are presented. I use it as a supplement to other text and as homework lessons. (The selections and activities are user friendly to send home for both students and parents). I WILL be purchasing more of this social studies and science series! As always, a “Member of the Mailbox Fan Club” from way back!!!
These books look fantastic! I glanced at the tables of contents for both books, and many of our topics that we’ve studied in class are there! I’d love to use them for independent reinforcement work on Fridays. Thanks for another great resource!
I am looking forward to the science and social studies articles that I can use for fluency, small group, and for centers during ELA. I’m especially looking for topics that integrate with our science and social studies curriculums and to meet state standards. These look great!
As a Media Center Specialist, I need a hook to grab students attention when they enter the Media Center. The Middle Grades History fun facts would jump start my classes!
Looks very interesting and the kids love doing activities outside of their books.
I try to include my content into my writing or reading, but it is not always easy to come up with creative ways to do this. I love the idea of having a book so that it is already at my finger tips. The 2-3 grade social studies and science books look like fun and a great way to implement reading into everything!!!! I wish you had one for 1st grade…hint, hint!
I love the Science Grades 2-3. You are exactly right about sqeezing in SS & Science. I’m always feeling guilty about not having enough adequate time for these 2 subjects. I have a 3rd grade class with 15 boys and only 7 girls. The boys especially love Science. They actually did not mind the work because they find this info so interesting. Thanks from a grateful 3rd grade teacher!
