A New Chapter

I am so happy to welcome you to a new chapter of
The Mailbox® Blog! Until now, Debra has been your guide through The Mailbox Blog. Starting with today’s post, many of the editors here at The Education Center® will be taking turns hosting it.
In case we haven’t already met, please let me introduce myself. My name is Hope Spencer. Before I came to The Education Center, I taught first, second, and third grade in Bellevue, Nebraska, for ten years. Then I moved to Galveston, Texas, where I taught second grade for two years.
I’ve been at The Education Center for almost ten years. During that time, I’ve had so many great opportunities and responsibilities! Currently, I am the managing editor of Teacher’s Helper® magazine, grades 2/3; and Teacher’s Helper® magazine, grade 1. I also manage book products and write for the grades 2/3 edition of The Mailbox magazine and for The Mailbox® BOOKBAG®. There is always something fun to keep an editor busy around here.
There are so many things to talk about. Where should we begin? Let’s see. Maybe you’ve been reading this blog for a while. Maybe this is your first visit. Maybe you’re somewhere in between. I’d love to know what you want to see on the blog. Are you looking for ideas? For information about new products from The Mailbox Book Company®? Or are you looking for topics of discussion? Maybe you’re looking for something entirely different.
Please leave a comment and let me know what you’re looking for. Or just leave a comment and introduce yourself. I’m so looking forward to meeting you and interacting with you on this forum!

Hi! I teach developmental kindergarten (4&5 year olds in Michigan. Since we celebrate a week in May for Michigan week, I would really like some easy hands-on projects to make and easy coloring pages to use about our state. Could you help me? Thank you.

Pre-School Inauguration Ideas
I always do this activity in Feb. for Presidents Day with my 4 year olds. I have modified it for the Inauguration Day. On Monday during circle time use your newsprint to write the word Inauguration on it. using red, and blue markers-write down each students definition.
MONDAY
Explain that Inauguration happens every 4 years, the next one will happen when they are____ years old.( Math)
Explain that America likes to celebrate the new President with a parade just like 4th of July because we are happy for our Freedom to vote in our country.( Social Studies)
Prepare for a classroom Inauguration Parade!
Cut poster boards into 4 equal parts, give a part to each child and allow the child to paint their Inauguration idea on it using red, white and blue paint.
TUESDAY
Find a good marching song, give each student their “part of the Inauguration” and march around the room (if able, start your parade in the middle of the one on television). Serve
red, white and blue snacks and let the students take their part of the Inauguration home to show off how they took part in the Inauguration!
SCIENCE- If your weather permits (I am in Florida)
Monday- paint yogurt cups red, white and blues. give each child a fast spourting tree seed to plant. Write a presidential wish-something that the child would like for the President to do for America-laminate it and put it on a popsicle type stick with the child’s name on it.
Monitor the plant’s growth, water and observe… take the sprout out of the yogurt cup on Presidents Day and plant it outdoors, stick the child’s wish near their sprout. Take a picture of the area and the children and send it home for them to view next Presidents Day.
I would like to see a blend of both ideas and new products. Both are helpful when planning for my classroom. I am very excited about the blog.
I do not have an idea but I would also love to receive info about the Inauguration for Preschool
Smile God Loves YOU Thanks,Karen
