Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers, are you ready? Two new editions of The Mailbox magazine are coming! That’s right: we are splitting the Kindergarten–Grade 1 edition of The Mailbox into two separate magazines—one for Kindergarten only and one for Grade 1 only. These new magazines will be in the mail the first week of October and the online pages will be posted at two new Mailbox Companion levels on October 8. That’s less than 3 weeks away!

Although the magazines are new, the managing editors are some familiar faces.

Sharon Murphy
Kindergarten Edition

Sharon Murphy is the managing editor of the new Kindergarten edition. She is a former elementary school teacher who has worked at The Mailbox for 12 years. During that time, she has worked on The Mailbox Primary edition, several editions of Teacher’s Helper, dozens of books for early childhood and primary teachers, and The Mailbox Companion.

Amy Erickson
Grade 1 Edition

Amy Erickson is the managing editor of the new Grade 1 edition. She is also a former elementary school teacher and has worked at The Mailbox for more than 10 years. Amy was most recently the managing editor of the K–1 edition. She has also worked on The Mailbox Primary edition, Teacher’s Helper magazine, and many of our early childhood and primary-level books.

With grade-specific editions of The Mailbox, each issue will be packed with ideas and activities for the skills you need when you need them. Plus, we’ve included more ready-to-go materials to save you time. The table of contents page and sample pages for each magazine are linked below for you to get a sneak peek.

I can’t wait to hear what YOU think of these two new editions!

I wish that you would separate the Intermediate magazine into grade levels. I love your creative ideas but get so disappointed when Mailbox Bookbag is geared so much towards primary grades and the Mailbox Intermediate Magazine is oftentimes a stretch for my 5th graders.

Currently I subscribe to all three of your magazines but I am thinking of cutting back because I have not been able to use the magazines as much as I wish.

It seems that 5th grade is the forgotten grade in your company. There are so many great resources out there but many times the resources from Mailbox stop with 4th grade. I just wish that 5th grade would be receive the same attention as your other grades.

As a second grade teacher, I too agree with Krystal. Many of the issues are not second grade friendly. It would be great if the 2/3 magazine could also be separate issues.

I love Mailbox magazine, but was never happy with the K-1 combination. When I was looking for something as a first grade teacher, it always seemed like the magazine covered mostly Kindergarten, and I’m sure it seemed like the opposite to K teachers! I am looking forward to the first grade only edition! I’m sure I will find what I’m looking for!

I still wish that you would do a preprimary level magazine.

I am looping with my K kids to first grade this year. I did order both mags. I have not received my 1st edition yet. I am sure I will be pleased.

After 10 years of teaching 2nd grade, I was moved back to kindergarten Thank the Lord, I am a pack rat and have my 1990-1995 issues of Kindergarten Mailbox and Worksheet Magagines/ Companion. I also was a subscriber to the 1st grade editions from 1990-1993. Kindergarten has changed quite a bit since I taught. We used to do 6 letters and letter sounds per 9 weeks… now if they don’t know all their letters and sounds when they enter kinder., they are considered behind. I have been using some of the old 1st grade worksheets from Worksheet Magazine for
color by the codes. I hope the new issues will be as good as those from over a decade ago.

As a long time subscriber, I am elated that I will once again have a Kindergarten specific edition. I found myself frequently going back to those issues from long ago instead of the current issue to find activities that were appropriate for my Kinders.

I wish you would do the same for second grade teachers. I stopped subscribing because I can’t use any of the materials after the first month; it’s all too challenging for my students.

As a K teacher who teaches in a private, half-day program, I LOVED having the K-1 subscription! Having a smaller class, I used alot of the material…both advanced and not.
When I read of the split, I wasn’t sure which to take. I’m going to stay with the K edition, but, as mentioned by another teacher, PLEASE also include the advanced material or, at least, include it in your extras every month!!

I am also a long-time subscriber to the Mailbox (since 1979!) It has made lots of improvements over the years - and I have loved every issue! (You should see my collection!) I am looking forward to the new Kindergarten-specific issues. I hope you will continue to include some ideas on how to differentiate instruction for Kindergartners that are advanced and some that are struggling. (I’ve seen it in some of the more current issues - just keep it up, please!!!) Thanks for all the great ideas!

I’m excited to receive a grade level appropriate for kindergarten magazine. Like the other readers, I felt sometimes the content was too hard for kinders! Thanks Mailbox :)
