In first grade, we read every day!!! I have two teacher read aloud times, and a read on your own time. Once a week we do a book treasure…we read a book and I either give the students something or we make something that symbolizes the book. Retelling the book treasure book to their parents is their homework, and the parents have a form to write down their child’s responses. The students LOVE it!!! I enjoy reading what they recalled, and their insights into the story. Today we are reading The Wind Blew, A Visitor For Bear, Shark in the Dark, Moose Tracks, and What a Duck!
We read a lot of books today. We usually read about 5-10 books a day. I do family child care in my home and my children love to read and be read to. We read Green eggs and ham.
I am currently reading to my class “Because of Winn -Dixie”. this is the first time I have read it to a groups of students. I am pleased at how much they seem to enjoy the plot. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate reading with expression.
