My Inbox Is Overflowing!

It’s been a busy week! I’ve received more info about freebies, fun offers, contests, and worthwhile websites than I can possibly get onto the blog. Here are a few of my favorites, just for starters. More to come!

If you teach grades 5-8, be sure to check out the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Ten finalists receive a trip to New York City, and one winner receives $50,000 in US savings bonds! PBS has introduced a new awards program especially for teachers. The PBS Teachers Innovation Awards program showcases teachers who use innovative teaching techniques to engage their students. Teachers of PreK through grade 12, including classroom teachers and library media specialists, are invited to enter by submitting a 200-word essay and a video or photo showing how they inspire students. Ten winners will receive a trip to the PBS Showcase in Austin, Texas; 40 finalists will receive a prize pack of PBS gifts. To enter, visit www.pbs.org/teachers/innovators/. Entries are due March 12, 2010.

Kicking Off the Olympics

The Olympic Games begin in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on February 12. Show your students the science behind Olympic events with the 16 free videos now available at www.nbclearn.com. Narrated by NBC news anchor Lester Holt, the videos share the science behind skating, hockey, skiing, and more. Videos run four to five minutes and are cosponsored by NBC and the National Science Foundation.

With resources like this, your science lessons are sure to be gold-medal winners!

This Just In: Grant for a Great Reading Program

What does your librarian do to get young adults excited about books and reading? Encourage him or her to share those plans for a chance to win $2,500 for the library, a Kodak Vid Camera, and more. Hurry: entries are due this Friday, January 15, 2010.
